Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) eliminates core job function
#1The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports 115+ million AMI electric meters installed as of 2023, representing approximately 72% of all electric meters — up from under 5% in 2007. Major utilities including Duke Energy, Southern Company, Eversource, and ComEd have declared their service territories functionally complete for electric AMI. Gas AMI (using Itron ERT modules, Sensus FlexNet, and Elster EVO mesh) is now deploying at scale following the electric precedent, with Consolidated Edison, National Fuel, and Piedmont Natural Gas announcing multi-year gas AMI programs. Water AMI is the least mature but accelerating rapidly through Neptune Technology, Badger Meter, and Xylem's cellular network deployments. Each meter type transition directly eliminates the physical read visit that employed meter readers.
