Autonomous Weapons Reducing Manned Crew Force Structure
#1The DoD Replicator Initiative (announced 2023, targeting thousands of autonomous systems fielded within 18–24 months) explicitly aims to field attritable autonomous platforms to counter China's mass advantage — replacing crewed systems with unmanned equivalents. Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programs (Boeing MQ-28, General Atomics Gambit) are designed to replace manned wingmen at a 2:1 or greater ratio. The Army's Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) program envisions autonomous ground combat platforms that would traditionally require a crew of 3–4 specialists. Each unmanned platform fielded directly reduces the number of crew billets — and therefore the number of crew supervisors — required per equivalent combat capability.
