Autonomous and semi-autonomous air platform proliferation reducing human crew headcount
#1The DoD has committed over $6 billion to Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programs, with the XQ-58A Valkyrie, General Atomics Gambit series, and Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat all advancing toward operational deployment as AI-piloted wingmen to crewed aircraft. The FY2025 NDAA accelerated CCA procurement timelines, and SECDEF directives are pushing unmanned ratios in future air wings toward 1:5 (one crewed aircraft supervised by up to five autonomous wingmen). Each autonomous platform eliminates one crew member billet, and as autonomous platforms require less intensive human supervision than crewed aircraft, the total demand for first-line supervisors scales down proportionally.
